ESG Integration Research and Education Center

The ESG Integration Research and Education Center (ESG-IREC) of Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP), The University of Osaka, was launched in 2021. It aims to promote a constructive understanding and dissemination of “ESG integration” through industry-academia collaboration in research, education, and practice.

ESG-IREC aims to work with companies that are committed to ESG to achieve both business success and the resolution of various social issues. From the perspective of global governance, which OSIPP has specialized in for many years, OSIPP deals with international public policy, labor and economic policy, international politics, international law, and environmental issues.

Research Activities

  • With a broad vision of “ESG integration” that enables more sustainable economic activity for the planet and humanity while increasing corporate profits, we will promote specific ESG scoring and corporate value analysis methods, as well as empirical research into risk and return based on ESG factors.

Practical Activities

  • We provide cooperation that meets the needs of companies, organizations, managers, projects, an so on, that are leading to the practice of ESG integration.

Educational Activities

  • The “Theory and Practice of ESG Integration” (Faculty of Law/OSIPP MA Program) is operated by ESG-IREC members (invited faculty members).
  • ESG-IREC and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun jointly developed the course “ESG Impact on Business Strategies” (Faculty of Law/OSIPP MA Program, open to all faculties and graduate schools).
  • “ESG-Integration: Theory and Practice” (OSIPP Master’s and Doctoral Program students, English/online course), held in collaboration with visiting professor Philip Sugai (Director of the Social Value Research Center, Doshisha University).
  • “On Campus Internship: Work Style Innovation” is a project-based class in collaboration with companies (Center for Education in Liberal Arts and Sciences)

ESG Integration Research and Education Center (ESG-IREC) of Osaka School of International Public Policy is an institution that promotes research, education, and social collaboration from both theoretical and practical perspectives on a desirable “ESG integration” model that achieves both business success for companies and problem-solving and a virtuous cycle for creating a sustainable future.

What is ESG?

ESG is the acronym from the initial letters of “Environment,” “Social,” and “Governance.” In recent years, “ESG management” and “ESG investment” have been attracting attention, as companies try to maximize their economic returns through core businesses and responsible management while also working to resolve social and environmental issues for a sustainable future.

ESG-IREC aims to enhance social-academic collaboration activities for this purpose, and has established an interdisciplinary and cross-industry activity team structure with directors in five fields (Academic Collaboration; Business Collaboration; Project Based Learning (PBL); International Collaboration; and, UN Collaboration) under the general directors.

The Value Research Center of Doshisha University

The Value Research Center (VRC) is an independent research center at Doshisha University that was officially established in November 2021. The VRC conducts research and outreach activities to develop mechanisms for measuring, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on the value creation and destruction impacts that organizations make on their most important stakeholders.
